Yacht Charter in Crete: Boat Days from Chania for Villa Guests

Discover more articles in search results.

Crete has a long, dramatic coastline, and the west of the island around Chania offers some of its best days at sea: the turquoise lagoon of Balos, the Venetian fortress on Imeri Gramvousa, the protected islet of Theodorou and the cliff-backed bays of the south coast. A yacht charter in Crete can mean a private day boat from a nearby harbour or a crewed yacht for a longer cruise. This guide explains the main routes from Chania, how the wind shapes them and what to settle before you book from your villa. For the fleet and longer charters, see our yachts for charter page.

1. Day boat or yacht charter

A private day boat is hired for a few hours or a full day and returns to the harbour it left from. A yacht charter usually means a larger crewed yacht, and can also cover a longer cruise around the Greek islands. Crete is one of the destinations where we arrange yachts, alongside Mykonos and other Greek islands. Describe the day or the trip you have in mind, and we will suggest suitable vessels through our yacht charter service.

2. Departure points in west Crete

Where you board shapes the day. The main options for guests staying around Chania are:

Common departure points
HarbourLocationSuits
ChaniaThe city's harbour, close to the Old TownShort trips along the north coast and towards Theodorou
KissamosWest of Chania, on the Gulf of KissamosBalos lagoon and Imeri Gramvousa
Chora SfakionSouth coast, reached by a winding mountain roadLoutro, Sweetwater beach and Marmara

Ask which harbour the boat is based in and whether it can collect you elsewhere, as moving a boat to another port can add time and cost.

3. Balos and Imeri Gramvousa

The classic west Crete day sails from Kissamos around the Gramvousa peninsula. Imeri Gramvousa, a small islet with a Venetian fortress on its summit, is a popular first stop, before the boat continues to the shallow lagoon of Balos. Both are protected landscapes, so follow the local rules on access, anchoring and behaviour ashore. Our guide to Balos and Elafonisi from Chania compares the boat with the road route and covers what to pack.

4. Theodorou islet and the north coast

Agioi Theodoroi, or Theodorou, is the rocky islet you see off Agia Marina, west of Chania. It is a protected nature reserve for the kri-kri, the Cretan wild goat, and landing is not permitted, apart from the feast day of the Saints Theodore in June. Boats can sail around it, look for the goats from a distance and anchor nearby for a swim. It makes a relaxed half day, and it is close to {a(“villa-aro/”,”Villa Aro”)} in Agia Marina.

East of Chania, the Akrotiri peninsula has small coves best seen from the sea. Ask the skipper which bays are suitable on the day; parts of the coast around Souda Bay are military areas with restricted access.

5. The south coast: Loutro, Sweetwater and Marmara

The south coast of Chania faces the Libyan Sea, with mountains falling straight into the water. Loutro has no road access and is reached by boat from Chora Sfakion or on foot. Nearby, Sweetwater beach (Glyka Nera) takes its name from freshwater springs, and Marmara sits at the mouth of the Aradena gorge. These beaches are usually reached by boat or on foot, which makes a private boat a comfortable way to see several in a day.

The drive from Chania to Chora Sfakion crosses the mountains, so plan an early start and a full day.

6. Longer cruises from Crete

Crete sits at the southern edge of the Aegean, and the open sea between it and the nearest islands is wider than the short hops of the Cyclades. Multi-day cruises from Crete therefore suit larger crewed yachts, settled weather and flexible plans. If you are considering a longer itinerary, share your dates, group size, cabin needs and how many days you want at sea, and we will check which yachts and routes are realistic for the season through our yacht charter service.

For most villa guests, though, one or two well-chosen day trips give the best of the coast without giving up evenings at the villa.

7. Wind and the best time to go

The summer north wind, the meltemi, also reaches Crete and can make the north coast and open passages choppy, especially in July and August. On those days a skipper may suggest a sheltered route, a shorter trip or a different day. Late spring and early autumn are often calmer and quieter, though conditions change from day to day.

Keep at least one spare day in your plans, and agree before booking what happens if the trip is shortened, rerouted or cancelled because of the weather. The skipper's decision on safety is final.

9. Planning a boat day from your villa

Most of our Chania villas are on the Akrotiri peninsula, east of the city, including Villa Artemis, Villa Cavo and Villa Only View. From there, Chania harbour is the nearest departure point, while Kissamos and Chora Sfakion need a longer transfer. Villa Aro in Agia Marina is already west of the city, on the way to Kissamos.

Our Chania concierge team can arrange the boat, the transfer to the harbour and dinner back at the villa, and fit the day around the rest of your plans. For ideas on land, see our guide to things to do in Chania.

Questions before you book

Can I charter a yacht in Crete?

Yes. Crete is one of the destinations where we arrange yachts, from private day boats to crewed yachts. Tell us your dates, group and the kind of trip you want, and we will suggest suitable vessels.

Where do boats to Balos leave from?

Boats to Balos usually leave from Kissamos, west of Chania, often stopping at Imeri Gramvousa on the way.

Can we land on Theodorou islet?

No. It is a protected reserve for the kri-kri, and landing is not permitted except on the feast day of the Saints Theodore in June. Boats can sail around it and anchor nearby for a swim.

Is a boat day possible on the south coast?

Yes. Chora Sfakion is the usual starting point for Loutro, Sweetwater beach and Marmara. Allow for the mountain drive from Chania.

What if the weather is bad?
