Where to Stay in Mykonos: A Villa Guest's Guide to Every Area
From the sandy bays of Ornos and Platis Gialos to the quiet east coast at Kalafatis and Kalo Livadi, here is how each part of Mykonos feels to stay in, and which villas sit where.
IN THIS GUIDE
For most villa guests, the best area to stay in Mykonos is the south and west side, around Ornos, Kanalia and Platis Gialos, where the sandy bays sit a short drive from Mykonos Town. Choose the east, around Kalafatis, Kalo Livadi and Elia, for space and quiet, and Tourlos if you arrive by ferry. Our luxury villas in Mykonos cover all of these areas, and the villa enquiry form is the quickest way to match one to your dates.
How Mykonos is laid out
Mykonos is small. The island covers 85.5 square kilometres, and most of its residents live in Mykonos Town, known locally as Chora, on the west coast. Almost everything a visitor plans around sits within a short radius of it: the airport lies about 4 km south-east of town, the New Port is just to the north at Tourlos, and the best-known beaches line the south coast, with Platis Gialos around 5 km south of Chora.
It helps to picture the island in four parts. The south coast is a chain of sandy bays, from Ornos and Agios Ioannis in the west to Psarou, Platis Gialos, Paradise and Elia further east. The east is quieter and more open, with the long beaches of Kalo Livadi and Kalafatis below the inland village of Ano Mera. Close to town, Tourlos and Agios Stefanos sit on the coast north of Chora, while Kanalia rises on the west side between town and Agios Ioannis. The north coast faces straight into the prevailing summer wind.
Where you stay also shapes how you move. Buses leave from depots in town: the southern depot at Fabrika serves Ornos, Agios Ioannis, Platis Gialos, Psarou, Paraga and Paradise; a northern depot above the old port runs to Ano Mera, Elia and Kalafatis; and a depot at the old port serves Tourlos and Agios Stefanos. Small boats also shuttle between the south-coast beaches.
South coast: Ornos, Platis Gialos, Psarou and Elia
This is the Mykonos of the postcards: soft sand, clear water and a string of beach restaurants and clubs, most of them easy to reach from town. It is the most popular stretch of the island in July and August, so privacy comes from the villa itself rather than the beach below it.
Ornos
The settlement has grown steadily more popular and its sandy beach has a cosmopolitan feel, with a full day’s worth of facilities, water sports and diving centres. Neighbouring Agios Ioannis is sandy and shallow, with a view across to Delos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990. Villa Aegeas in Ornos has 11 bedrooms for up to 22 guests and a private pool, 1 km from Ornos beach and 3.5 km from Mykonos Town.
Best for: first visits, families and large groups who want town and beach within easy reach.
Platis Gialos and Lino
One of the easiest beaches to reach, with everything from traditional tavernas to beach bars and a wide choice of water sports. It is also the main departure point for water taxis east to Elia and the beaches in between. Inland, Villa Casa del Lupo in Lino is a 3-bedroom villa for up to 6 guests, 2.9 km from Platis Gialos beach and 2.5 km from the airport.
Best for: couples and small groups who want beach days without a long drive.
Psarou
Right next door to Platis Gialos, Psarou is known for fine, almost white sand, clear blue water and beach bars famous for their parties. It is known as a magnet for well-known visitors.
Best for: long lunches, beach-club afternoons and being at the centre of the scene.
Elia
The longest of the island’s best-known beaches, with a water sports centre and a mix of honeymooning couples, families and well-known faces. It sits at the calmer, eastern end of the south coast, past the livelier Paradise. Villa Ariadne’s Mitos in Elia has 6 bedrooms for up to 12 guests and a private heated pool.
Best for: space, a long sandy beach and a slower pace.
Paradise, between Platis Gialos and Elia, is relaxed in the morning before the music kicks in and the party runs long into the night. It is a lively place for a day or an evening out, and many guests choose to visit it rather than stay beside it.
East coast: Kalafatis and Kalo Livadi
The east of the island is quieter, with some of its biggest beaches. It sits below Ano Mera, the island’s traditional inland village, home to the Panagia Tourliani monastery, local cheesemakers and apiaries. Town is further away, so this is the side for guests who want to come back to quiet rather than to noise.
Kalafatis
Agia Anna beach at Kalafatis is the one people who know Mykonos well often name as their favourite swimming spot, with wooden umbrellas and a restaurant serving fresh seafood. Three of our villas are here, each 1.8 km from Agia Anna and 2.8 km from Ano Mera: Villa Horizon Blu in Kalafatis (6 bedrooms, up to 12 guests, heated pool), Villa Tropical Oasis (5 bedrooms, up to 10 guests) and Villa Zenial (4 bedrooms, up to 8 guests).
Best for: privacy, sea views and families who value calm over nightlife.
Kalo Livadi
One of the biggest beaches on Mykonos, shallow enough to be a favourite with families, yet with stylish bars and restaurants of its own. Villa Blue Diamond at Kalo Livadi has 9 bedrooms for up to 18 guests and a private pool, 300 metres from the beach and from a dock for boat transfers, and 400 metres from the Kalo Livadi helipad.
Best for: large groups, celebrations and arrivals by sea or air.
The trade-off is distance. The Kalafatis villas are about 10 km from Mykonos Town and Villa Blue Diamond about 11 km, so evenings in Chora usually mean a driver rather than a stroll. For many guests that is exactly the point.

Close to town: Tourlos, Paradisia and Kanalia
If you want Chora on hand for dinner in Little Venice or an evening walk to the windmills, but a pool and a terrace of your own to come back to, look at the areas just outside town. Tourlos is the practical choice for ferry travellers, while Kanalia, like Ornos, is calmer and quick to reach town, which suits families and larger groups.
Tourlos and Paradisia
Tourlos is home to the New Port, with Agios Stefanos beach just beyond it, which makes it the most practical base if you arrive or leave by ferry. Three of our villas sit in Paradisia, Tourlos, each 1.3 km from the New Port and 1.6 km from Agios Stefanos beach: Villa The Cove in Tourlos (6 bedrooms, up to 12 guests, heated pool), Villa Faros (6 bedrooms, up to 12 guests, heated pool) and Villa Blue (5 bedrooms, up to 10 guests).
Best for: island hoppers and guests who want sea and sunset views close to town.
Kanalia
A quiet, elevated area on the west side of the island, between town and the Ornos and Agios Ioannis bays. Villa Kiya in Kanalia has 6 bedrooms for up to 15 guests and a private pool, with a sandy beach 150 metres away, Ornos 2 km away and Mykonos Town 4.6 km away.
Best for: guests who want sea views and privacy without feeling remote.

Which area suits which kind of trip
There is no single best area to stay in Mykonos, only the best fit for how you plan to spend your days. Use this as a starting point, then tell us about the trip and we will match the area to it rather than the other way round.

A useful rule: the further east you go, the more space and calm you gain and the more you rely on a car in the evenings. The closer you are to Ornos and town, the easier it is to dip in and out of the island’s social life.
Villa or town hotel
Staying in Chora itself has one clear advantage: you can walk to the restaurants, boutiques, Little Venice and the windmills, and the bus depots are on your doorstep. The trade-off is space and privacy, at the heart of an island that gets up late and goes to bed late.
A villa turns that around. You gain room for the whole group, a private pool and terrace, and the freedom to set your own hours. Distance stops being a problem when the logistics are handled for you. Our private chauffeur service in Mykonos has drivers at your disposal around the clock, a private chef in your villa can prepare breakfasts, a barbecue or a seafood barbecue, and we arrange boat trips to coves reachable only by sea.
How to decide
Start with the size of your group and how often you plan to go into town. Couples on a short first visit often enjoy a few nights in Chora. Families, friends travelling together and anyone staying a week or more tend to get far more from a villa in Ornos, Kanalia or on the east coast. If you are undecided, share your dates, group size and budget with our travel designers and they will suggest villas in the areas that fit, including houses listed privately with us.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best part of Mykonos to stay in?
It depends on the trip. The south and west side, around Ornos, Kanalia and Platis Gialos, suits most first visits, with sandy bays and Mykonos Town a short drive away. Psarou and Platis Gialos put you near the beach clubs. The east, around Kalafatis, Kalo Livadi and Elia, trades proximity to town for space and calm, and Tourlos is the practical base for ferry travellers.
Is it better to stay in Mykonos Town or on the beach?
Mykonos Town lets you walk to restaurants, boutiques, Little Venice and the windmills, and the bus depots are in town. A beach area or villa gives you space, privacy and a pool of your own. A villa near Ornos or Kanalia, a few kilometres from Chora, gives you both: town is easy to reach, and quiet to come back to.
Where should first-timers stay in Mykonos?
First-time visitors usually do best close to town and the south coast, where getting around is simplest. Ornos and Kanalia sit a few kilometres from Chora on the west side, Platis Gialos is around 5 km south of town with water taxis along the coast, and buses from the Fabrika depot link these beaches with town.
Where is the main area of Mykonos?
The main area is Mykonos Town, also called Chora, on the west coast, where most of the island's residents live. It holds Little Venice, the windmills, the old port and the main bus depots. The New Port is just north at Tourlos, the airport about 4 km south-east, and the best-known beaches run along the south coast.
