A wedding in Mykonos is legally either a civil ceremony at the Mykonos City Hall or a religious ceremony in church. Private villas, beaches and hotels host the celebration around that legal step. Plan outdoor moments around the meltemi winds of mid-May to mid-September, and, for a civil ceremony, email your documents to the municipality one month ahead. Our destination weddings team plans on the island, and our Greece wedding venues guide compares venue types across Greece.

Why couples choose Mykonos

Mykonos is small and easy to reach, which matters when you are asking people to fly in for a weekend. The airport sits about 4 km south-east of the town and is served by international flights in summer, and the ten villas listed in our Mykonos collection are between 2.5 km and 11.5 km from it, so arrival day stays simple.

The island also does much of the styling for you. The whitewashed lanes of Chora, the waterfront houses of Little Venice and the windmills at Kato Mili are its best-known backdrops, and the island has an abundance of churches. Delos, the archaeological island about 2 km away, is reached by regular tour boats, which gives guests a morning that has nothing to do with the wedding.

Where you base the wedding party shapes the whole weekend. Our guide to where to stay in Mykonos explains each area, and if you plan to stay on, our Mykonos honeymoon guide covers the days after.

Mykonos wedding venues: the options on the island

On Mykonos, the legal ceremony and the celebration often happen in different places. The municipality holds civil ceremonies at the City Hall, and a church wedding takes place in church. Everything else, from a villa terrace to a stretch of sand, is the setting for the party and for any symbolic vows. Our event planning team also organises themed parties, if you want a second celebration around the wedding.

PRIVATE

A private villa

Vows, dinner and party at one address, with the wedding party sleeping on site. Villa Aegeas in Ornos has an outdoor dining area for 22, Villa Kiya in Kanalia a wind-protected dining area for 16, and the grounds of Villa Blue in Paradisia include a chapel.

Best for: intimate weddings and weekends under one roof

CIVIL

Mykonos City Hall

The legal step for a civil marriage, with two adult witnesses. Confirm the current days and times with the Municipality of Mykonos.

Best for: the legal formalities, with the celebration elsewhere

RELIGIOUS

A chapel or church

A church wedding is a legal marriage in Greece in its own right. The island has an abundance of churches, and Our Lady of the Holy Rosary is its only Catholic church.

Best for: couples who want a religious ceremony

BY THE SEA

A beach

Under Law 2971/2001, the Greek seashore and beach are public property, with free public access. Check with the municipality before setting anything up on the sand.

Best for: small symbolic moments and photographs

HOSTED

A hotel or beach club

Event spaces, kitchens and staff of their own, and the natural choice once a guest list outgrows a private house.

Best for: large receptions

Whatever the setting, confirm in writing before you book whether the owner accepts an event, the maximum number of guests, any noise curfew and where suppliers can unload.

Best months and weather for a Mykonos wedding

The wedding season on Mykonos is dry. National Observatory of Athens data show average rainfall of 5.1 mm in May and less than 4 mm a month from June to August, while the rainy season runs from October to March.

The wind is the real planning variable. The meltemi, the strong, dry north wind of the Aegean, is strongest in the afternoon and often dies down at night, but can last for days. At its strongest, some yachts and most inter-island ferries cannot sail, so any arrival by boat needs a road fallback, and veils, arches and table linen need a sheltered spot.

June and September sit either side of the hottest months, with average highs of 26.0°C and 25.6°C and warm evenings for dinner outside. May and October are milder, and our guide to Mykonos in October covers the end of the season. Two calendar points apply whatever the weather: summer civil ceremonies run from 13:00 to 15:00, which leaves the evening free for the celebration, and Orthodox guidelines published by the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Denver exclude weddings from 1 to 15 August.

Legal and church paperwork, from official sources

The Municipality of Mykonos publishes its own requirements for civil weddings. This is the route for couples who do not live on the island.

  1. Choose civil or religious

A civil ceremony, a religious ceremony or both are recognised as a legal marriage. A villa or beach ceremony with a celebrant is symbolic on its own.

  2. Collect your documents at home

For each partner: a wedding licence from the competent authority where you live, a complete birth certificate, divorce or death records for any earlier marriage, a valid passport (EU citizens can use an ID card) and, where it applies, a residence permit valid until the wedding date.

  3. Apostille, then translate

Apostille each document first, then have it officially translated into Greek, apostille included, by the Translation Department of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a Greek embassy or consulate, or a Greek lawyer. Originals stay attached. Papers from countries outside the apostille system are stamped by the foreign authority and the Greek Embassy instead.

  4. Email the file one month ahead

The municipality asks for all documents by email one month before the ceremony, so they can be checked.

  5. Apply in person and marry

Both partners apply in person at least two days before the wedding. Two adult witnesses with passports attend the ceremony at the City Hall.

  6. Register the marriage

Civil and religious marriages should be registered within 40 days at the registry office (Lixiarcheio) of the place where they took place.

US and UK couples

The US Embassy notes that an Affidavit of Marriage may be required, notarised at the Embassy in Athens by appointment, and advises allowing at least two days in Athens. For British couples, marrying abroad depends on local law, so check the process and documents with the authority that registers marriages. Civil marriage in Greece has been open to same-sex couples since 16 February 2024.

Church weddings

The Denver guidelines state that a non-Orthodox partner must be a Christian baptised in water in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, and that the sponsor must be an Orthodox Christian in good standing. Practice can differ locally, so confirm the date and paperwork with the priest first.

Guest villas and transfers

A practical way to house a wedding party is a main villa for the couple and close family, with guest villas in the same part of the island. These are the ten Mykonos villas listed in our collection, by size.

Grouping by area keeps transfers short. Villa The Cove, Villa Faros and Villa Blue are all in Paradisia, Tourlos, 1.3 km from the new port, and together sleep up to 34 guests; Villa Horizon Blu, Villa Tropical Oasis and Villa Zenial in Kalafatis sleep up to 30. Villa Blue Diamond suits an arrival by sea: it is 300 metres from Kalo Livadi beach and a dock for boat transfers, and 400 metres from the Kalo Livadi helipad. The full Mykonos villa collection also includes houses listed privately.

Moving guests matters as much as housing them. Our chauffeur team in Mykonos works 24/7 with Mercedes Sprinter vans of 11, 12, 14 and 16 seats and a Mercedes V Class, so a timed schedule from each villa to the ceremony is simple to run. For arrivals and a day at sea, our boat trips and yacht charters use a fleet of 2 to 8+ cabin yachts, catamarans and motor yachts. The island’s roads are narrow and busy in August, so build extra time into every transfer.

A 12-month planning timeline

This is a working order of tasks, not a legal schedule. The fixed deadlines are the municipality’s documents by email one month before and the in-person application at least two days before, plus registration within 40 days.

THE 12-MONTH PLANNING TIMELINE
  1. 12 MONTHS BEFORE

Set the date and guest count

Decide between civil, religious or a symbolic ceremony, and check your nationality’s requirements with your embassy.

  3. 10 MONTHS BEFORE

    Secure the villas

Book the main and guest villas, with written confirmation of event permission, guest numbers, noise limits and supplier access.

  4. 9 MONTHS BEFORE

  6. 6 MONTHS BEFORE

    Plan guest transport

Map every villa-to-venue journey, reserve vans and boats, and write a road fallback for any sea arrival.

  7. 4 MONTHS BEFORE

    Start the document file

Order licences, birth certificates and any divorce records, and ask each issuing office whether a recent issue date is needed.

  8. 3 MONTHS BEFORE

  10. 1 MONTH BEFORE

    Email the file to Mykonos

GOOD TO KNOW

Frequently asked questions

Can a US citizen get married in Greece?

Yes. The US Embassy in Greece says US citizens may marry in a civil ceremony, a religious ceremony or both, and either is a legal marriage. An Affidavit of Marriage may be required, notarised at the Embassy in Athens by appointment. On Mykonos, civil ceremonies take place at the City Hall, on days confirmed by the municipality, and every marriage should be registered at the local registry office within 40 days.

Can UK citizens legally marry in Greece?

Yes. A civil or a religious ceremony is a legal marriage in Greece, and GOV.UK advises British couples to check the process and documents with the authority that registers marriages. For couples who do not live on Mykonos, the municipality asks for a wedding licence from the home authority, a complete birth certificate and a passport, apostilled and officially translated into Greek, and emailed one month before the ceremony.

What is the best time to have a wedding in Greece?

On Mykonos, the driest months are May to September. National Observatory of Athens data show average highs of 22.5°C in May, 26.0°C in June and 25.6°C in September. The meltemi wind blows from about mid-May to mid-September and is strongest in the afternoon, so evening ceremonies in sheltered spots are easier. Orthodox guidelines published by the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Denver exclude weddings from 1 to 15 August.

What is the average cost of a wedding in Greece?

Costs vary too widely for an average to be useful. On Mykonos, the budget is shaped mainly by the number of guests, the month, the venue and how many villas you need to house everyone, followed by transfers, catering, music, flowers and photography. The most reliable figure is a quote built on your own date, guest count and venues, which our event planner can prepare.

Which Greek island is best for newlyweds?

It depends on the trip you want. Mykonos suits couples who want beaches, boat days and evenings out, with Delos a short boat ride away, and several of our Mykonos villas are within walking distance of the sea. Chania, on Crete, is the other Greek destination in our collection, with most of our villas there in Akrotiri. Our Mykonos honeymoon guide covers the island for couples.
