Mykonos Beaches and Beach Clubs: A Villa Guest's Guide
Mykonos has beaches for every mood: lively beach clubs with DJs and long lunches, sheltered sandy bays for children, windswept beaches for windsurfers and quiet coves with no sunbeds at all. The best choice on any given day depends on the wind, the kind of day you want and how far you are willing to drive from your villa. This guide groups the main beaches and beach clubs by mood, explains how the summer wind changes the picture and shows how to plan your beach days around a villa stay. For a full picture of each area as a place to stay, see our guide to where to stay in Mykonos.
How the island's beaches are laid out
Most of the famous Mykonos beaches line the south coast, a chain of sandy bays running from Ornos and Agios Ioannis in the west, past Psarou and Platis Gialos, to Paraga, Paradise, Super Paradise, Agrari and Elia further east. The east coast has the long beaches of Kalo Livadi and Kalafatis. The north coast, with Agios Sostis, Panormos and Ftelia, faces straight into the summer wind and feels wilder and quieter.
Distances are short, but roads are narrow and busy in high season, so a beach that looks close on the map can take longer to reach in August. Small boats also link several south-coast beaches in summer.
Mykonos beaches by mood
| If you want | Try | Area |
|---|---|---|
| A polished beach-club lunch | Psarou, Platis Gialos, Paraga | South coast |
| Music and a party atmosphere | Paradise, Super Paradise | South coast |
| Easy swimming with children | Ornos, Agios Stefanos | West and near town |
| Long, relaxed beach days | Elia, Kalo Livadi | South-east |
| Windsurfing and kitesurfing | Kalafatis, Ftelia | East and north |
| A natural beach without sunbeds | Agios Sostis | North coast |
Use the table as a starting point, then check the wind forecast on the morning itself; the section on the meltemi below explains why.
Beach clubs: the lively south coast
Psarou is the most polished bay on the island and home to Nammos, one of the best-known names in Mykonos. Next door, Platis Gialos is a long, organised beach with sunbeds, restaurants and water sports. A little further east, Paraga is home to Scorpios, known for its sunset sessions. Paradise and Super Paradise are the island’s traditional party beaches, with music from early afternoon.
For a Paraga or Psarou day, Villa Casa del Lupo in Lino, Platis Gialos is well placed: the villa listing puts Scorpios 1.7 km away and Nammos 2.8 km away. Popular beach clubs and their restaurants often need reservations in high season, especially for sunbeds and lunch tables at weekends, so book ahead through our Mykonos concierge team rather than arriving on the day.
Relaxed and family-friendly bays
Ornos is a sheltered sandy bay close to Mykonos Town, with shallow water, tavernas and an easy, family-friendly feel. Agios Ioannis, just west of Ornos, is smaller and known for its sunset views towards Delos. Agios Stefanos, north of the New Port near Tourlos, is convenient for guests staying close to town.
Villa Aegeas and Villa 2 are both in Ornos, and Villa Kiya, Villa 1 and Villa 3 are in Kanalia, just above Mykonos Town, a short drive from these bays. Near Agios Stefanos, Villa Blue, Villa Faros and Villa The Cove are in Paradisia, Tourlos. Families planning around children will also find ideas on our family services page.
Long beaches of the east coast
Elia is one of the longest beaches on Mykonos, with organised sections and quieter stretches. Kalo Livadi is a wide, sandy bay with a more relaxed atmosphere than the south-coast clubs. Kalafatis, further east, is popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers thanks to the steady summer wind, and has a calmer, more spacious feel than the beaches closer to town.
On this side of the island, Villa Ariadne's Mitos is in Elia, Villa Blue Diamond in Kalo Livadi, and Villa Horizon Blu, Villa Tropical Oasis and Villa Zenial in Kalafatis.
Quiet and natural beaches of the north
Agios Sostis on the north coast has no organised sunbeds and is loved for its natural setting and clear water. Panormos and Ftelia, also on the north side, are more exposed to the wind and are favoured by windsurfers. On calm days these beaches feel like a different island; on windy days they can be rough for swimming.
Plan your beach days around the wind
The meltemi, the strong north wind of the Aegean summer, blows roughly from mid-May to mid-September and is usually strongest in July and August. When it blows, the north coast is exposed and the bays of the south coast, such as Paraga, Psarou and Ornos, are the most sheltered. On calm days, the north and east are at their best.
Check the forecast in the morning and keep at least one beach day flexible. Our concierge team can suggest where to go on the day and rebook a sunbed if the wind changes your plans.
Getting there from your villa
Parking at popular beaches fills up early in high season, so many villa guests use a private driver for beach-club days, especially when lunch includes a bottle of wine. A rental car gives freedom for quieter beaches further from town. A private boat day is another way to see the south coast, with swimming stops in coves that are hard to reach by road.
Beach days outside high season
In May, June, September and October the beaches are quieter, the sea is often still warm enough for swimming in autumn, and booking a sunbed is easier. Opening dates vary from year to year, and many beach clubs and beach restaurants close for the winter, so confirm what will be open for your dates before planning a day around one place. Our guide to Mykonos in October covers what to expect at the end of the season.
A simple beach-day plan
For a balanced week, mix one or two beach-club days with quieter mornings. A typical rhythm is: a lively lunch at a south-coast beach club early in the week, a calm family day at Ornos or Agios Stefanos, an east-coast day at Elia or Kalo Livadi, and a north-coast swim on the calmest day of the forecast. Leave at least one afternoon for the villa pool.
Questions before you book
What is the best beach in Mykonos?
It depends on the day you want. Psarou and Platis Gialos suit polished beach-club days, Ornos suits families, Elia and Kalo Livadi suit long, relaxed days, and Agios Sostis suits guests looking for a natural beach without sunbeds.
Do I need to book Mykonos beach clubs in advance?
In high season, booking ahead is strongly recommended for the best-known beach clubs, especially for sunbeds and lunch tables at weekends. Our concierge team can request reservations for your dates.
Which Mykonos beaches are best for children?
Sheltered bays with shallow water, such as Ornos, are the easiest with young children. Check the wind on the day, as conditions change quickly in summer.
Which beaches are sheltered from the meltemi?
The south-coast bays, such as Paraga, Psarou, Platis Gialos and Ornos, are generally the most sheltered when the north wind blows.
Are there quiet beaches in Mykonos in summer?
Yes. The north coast, including Agios Sostis, and the quieter stretches of the east coast are calmer than the south-coast clubs, especially early in the day.
